Travel and Vaccines: How to Protect Yourself Before Leaving the Country

Be sure to set up an appointment with your doctor 4-6 weeks before your trip.
- Most vaccines take time to be effective in your body and other must be given in a series over a period of days.

Talk to your doctor about routine, recommended, and required vaccines.
- Routine vaccines are for protection from diseases that are still common in many parts of the world even though they are rare in the United States.

- Recommended vaccines are vaccines designed to protect travelers from illnesses present in other parts of the world and to prevent the importation of infectious diseases across international borders
- These vaccines depend on destination, time of year, health status, and age.

- Required vaccines are determined by the International Health Regulation Department.
- Currently, the only required vaccine is for yellow fever and is only required if traveling to certain countries in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America
