Influenza

British volunteers are testing out a new vaccine for influenza that might be effective against every strain of the flu. This would allow the flu vaccine to remain the same, and not have to be altered every year depending on the virus's new "coat".

"Our hope is to develop a vaccine that works against all strains of influenza A and all subtypes so we won't need to keep making new flu vaccines each year and new flu vaccines when there is a pandemic" - lead researcher Sarah Gilbert

This vaccine would work by going after specific proteins that are common in several strains of the virus. Should this work in progress be supported by scientific studies, there is the possibility that the flu vaccine would always be in supply, and there would be a wider range of immunity.
